About this extension
StartHorizon is your new tab page, rebuilt around things you actually open a new tab to do.

Open a new tab and you land on a clean header with a rotating widget — clock, weather, calendar — sharing one slot so you get all three without three widgets fighting for space. Below it sits your tile grid: move sites in, group them, delete what you don't need. A search bar with your preferred engine sits next to it. No login, no account, no cloud sync.

The calendar reads .ics feeds, so your events show up inline without opening another tab. Weather comes from Open-Meteo when you allow geolocation. The clock can show any timezone. Below the tiles you can add more widget rows — extra searches, extra calendars, anything you want within reach when a new tab opens.

Horizon — your private AI assistant

Horizon runs a small, local model (Qwen3 0.6B). No API keys, no subscription, no roundtrip to a server. Ask "where did I bookmark that article about X" or "what was that site I was on last Tuesday about Y" — Horizon reads your bookmarks, history, and open tabs to answer. Your data stays on your machine. It's a 462 MB one-time download, after which it works offline.

AI Search — web search that knows what you meant

When you search the web through StartHorizon, a separate panel opens beside the results. The same local model re-ranks every result for relevance to your query, surfacing the ones that actually match and demoting SEO sludge. Sites behind Cloudflare, CDNs, or plain HTTP are flagged before you click. Optionally the model can summarize the results or discuss them in chat. Search engines supported out of the box: DuckDuckGo, SearXNG, Marginalia — plus any custom engine you add.

Make it yours

Image or video backgrounds. Dark and light themes, or follow your system. A dynamic sky tint that shifts with the real time of day. Ambient soundscapes if you want background noise while you work. An optional boot video that plays like an OS startup when you open the browser. Every widget is editable, and custom widgets and themes are supported; widget elements can be edited completely with css+js, or partially with only either css or png image.

Sovereignty

Your data is yours — StartHorizon just lets you see it and use it. Bookmarks aren't hidden behind a context menu; they're tiles on your workspace, move them around, group them, scan them visually. History isn't a buried sidebar; it's context Horizon pulls from when you ask "what was that site I was on about X". Tabs you have open feed the same context. Web search isn't a webpage someone else renders and ranks for you; StartHorizon pulls raw results from your chosen engine and lets the local model re-rank them, so the relevance ordering is yours, not the search engine's.

Weather needs no API key and no account — Open-Meteo is a free public service, and the only thing exposed is your approximate IP and the weather-lookup pattern. The UI can be translated into any language by editing a plain-text file of English keys (or handing them to any AI), and your translation isn't paywalled or gated behind a vendor account. No analytics, no telemetry, no server. The extension is open-source under PolyForm Noncommercial.

A context menu item lets you translate selected text on any page using the same local model — useful when you want a quick gloss without sending the page to a cloud translator.
