About this extension
Find out which zodiac sign was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born.

Enter three things:
  • Your birth date
  • Your exact birth time, to the minute
  • Your birth city

The add-on gives you your rising sign and its exact degree straight away. For the full interpretation of what that sign means, one click takes you to risingsigncalculators.com.

How the calculation works

The Ascendant is worked out from the Julian date, Greenwich Mean Sidereal Time, the obliquity of the ecliptic, and your latitude and longitude, following Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms (2nd edition). It uses the tropical zodiac. This is the same engine that powers the calculator on risingsigncalculators.com, so you get the same answer in both places.

Your birth city also supplies its IANA timezone, which lets the add-on work out the correct UTC offset for your actual birth date — including historical daylight-saving rules that no longer exist. A birth in London in May 1947, for example, is correctly treated as UTC+2 under British Double Summer Time.

How your birthplace is found

You type your city and pick it from the suggestions. Those suggestions come from a database of 11,668 cities packaged inside the add-on itself. There is no geocoding service, no map provider, and no lookup over the internet.

What it does not do
  • An exact birth time is required. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so there is deliberately no "I don't know my birth time" option — a guess usually produces the wrong sign. Your birth certificate is the reliable source.
  • Birth years 1800–2100 are supported.
  • Your birthplace has to be in the bundled city list. Very small towns may be missing; the nearest larger city is a good substitute.
  • This version calculates the rising sign only. It does not do moon signs, sun signs, or full birth charts.

Privacy
  • The add-on requests no browser permissions at all.
  • Your birth date, time, and city are used for the calculation and nothing else.
  • Nothing is saved — no history, no cookies, no local storage.
  • Nothing is sent to any server. The city database is read from inside the add-on package, not downloaded.
  • A web page opens only when you click "View Full Details". That link contains your rising sign name and nothing else — no date, time, place, or coordinates.

Astrology is offered here for entertainment and self-reflection.
