This privacy policy explains how the hoverlooknary Firefox add-on ("the add-on") handles your data.


When you hover over a word on a webpage, the add-on looks up that word in Wiktionary and shows its pronunciation (IPA) and short definitions in a tooltip. It also shows the root form of inflected words (for example, the infinitive of a conjugated verb).

• Hovered word text and page language. When you hover a word, the add-on reads the word under the cursor and the page's declared language (from the page's lang attribute) and sends that query to the corresponding Wiktionary MediaWiki API (for example, en.wiktionary.org). This is limited to the word itself; no surrounding text or page content is collected.
• Inflected root words. When a hovered word is an inflected form, the add-on makes a follow-up request to Wiktionary for the root form. Only the root word is sent.

This is "website content" data collection as declared in the add-on's manifest (data_collection_permissions.required: ["websiteContent"]).

• The hovered word and page language are used solely to fetch the definition and IPA from Wiktionary.
• No profiles are created, and no analytics or tracking code is included.

• No data is written to disk. Results are cached only in memory for the current session so that repeated hovers of the same word are instant, and the cache is cleared when the page or browser session ends.
• No cookies, browser storage, or other persistent storage are used.

• The hovered word and page language are transmitted to the third-party Wiktionary servers (operated by the Wikimedia Foundation) to fulfil your lookup request.
• The add-on does not sell, rent, or otherwise share your data with any other third parties.

• The add-on cannot read your data if you do not hover a word, and you can remove the add-on at any time from the Add-ons Manager.
• You can review and restrict the sites the add-on can access via the add-on's permissions settings in Firefox.
